Windows of Jew Town, Cochin

Posted by Shuva Brata Deb (Bangalore, India) on 20 September 2006 in Abstract & Conceptual.

This picture is from the old Jew Town at Cochin, the only Jewish street in India. This town has been home to the Jewish families settled here since 379 AD. Their population has dwindled drastically after the formation of Israel, but the town still reflects their ways. A centre of Cochin?s spice trade, there are scores of little companies that jostle each other in old, dilapidated buildings, filling the air with spicy aromas. Jewish names are visible all over, and there are several curio shops on the street leading to the synagogue.

Picture depicts the reducing head-count of jews in India. Good one and nice read about them in Wiki.

you've captured the run down aspect of this area - I didn't realize there was a Jewish population in India

I agree with Jason. You have captured the run down aspect of Jewish families very well here.

I agree with the others on capturing the run down aspect of the area. It looks simple but is very well done.
