King!Posted by Shuva Brata Deb (Bangalore, India) on 18 September 2004 in Animal & Insect. Thats the lion, the symbol of the Republic of India-a four headed lion is found in every Indian coin. The total population of the Asiatic Lion, in the wild, hovers around 250. So long as the Asiatic Lion population remains restricted to a single location it is at risk from catastrophic events. Efforts are underway to establish a second population of this endangered cat in a suitable habitat. Palpur-Kuno, in Madhya Pradesh, has been identified as the most viable area for this purpose. Lions have played an important role in the folklore of Indian culture for over 2000 years and have been celebrated as Lord of Beasts. Emperor Ashoka used the lion as a symbol of power and strength. This depiction of the lion eventually has become the symbol of the modern Republic of India.
